Phil 2:12 'work out you salvation with fear and trembling' is not telling us to 'work AT' our salvation, i.e. to earn our salvation by good works; but to express our salvation in perseverence, spiritual growth and service of our neighbours. The sentence continues in verse 13, 'for it is GOD who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.'
Our Christian lives are not lived in separation from God. Jesus Christ is working in and through us. One book on sanctification was appropriately entitled, 'Christ at work', because only Christ can live the Christian life of love. The good news is that he does so through us.
